Scrapping Event Photos: Birthdays!

Around our house, it's birthday season.  My kids all have their birthdays within just a few weeks of each other right at the start of the year.  I don't know how you all feel, but sometimes, scrapping all those birthday photos can either feel overwhelming or monotonous.  It can seem like there's no variety when it comes scrapping them or making layouts feel fun.

I would also guess that we want our loved ones to look back on their birthday pages and enjoy looking at them, so how do we balance our need to get them done every year without it seeming like the same 'ol, same 'ol?   Here are some ideas I hope will help get your creative mojo going as you make birthday layouts:

1 - Don't Feel Pressured to *Always* Use Traditional Birthday Themed Supplies.

On the above page, there was a lot of green, and since he had a Ninjago theme going on for his special day, I went with that.  I used brushes to create a black, chalky border that mimicked the black borders on his lego boxes.   A simple journaling card with the date of his birthday, lettering, and papers to match the photos fit the bill here.  I thought these supplies were much more suited to this page than candles, birthday cakes, confetti, etc.

2 - Have Fun With The Title of the Page.

I could've easily just put "Happy Birthday, Izzy!" as title here, but frankly, I've done that a time or two, so I chose a more interesting title.  Last year, my daughter was really excited that her age was going to be a double digit number, and she felt so grown up, so I made that the focus of this page.  It was a fun story to write and I hope it will be a fun memory for my girl.

3 - Take a Few Photos of Birthday Items Along With Photos of People.

It's true -  I could've just used to top photo of myself with my birthday cake, but isn't a birthday celebration also about the "stuff" we use to celebrate it, too?  I included a photo of the presents, too, because my kids usually help my husband wrap the gifts, and I like seeing their handiwork.

Below are some pictures of one child's Ninjago cupcakes, and the others are from my youngest child's Ninja party, which we put on a few days ago.  It was fun, but man, it was also a lot of work.  I snapped photos of the treats, goody boxes, and decorations, because I want to document all that effort and how cute everything looked!  In my opinion, it's more fun to scrap a variety of fun pictures that include both people and objects for celebrations.  I actually can't wait to scrap these photos now!

Dollar Days | Hello Love

Have you noticed the trend in chalkboard and chalk art? Celeste created the following pack in that style, so you can use them on chalk cards or change the color and use them as a stamp.

To make them look even more realistic, change your blend modes or move the sliders of the "blend if" bar in your layer styles pop-up window.  Here's a quick tutorial image to help you find the right place.

Make a sticker from an extracted image!

I love Celeste's contribution to the free with purchase collaboration this month, called Curiosity. Her whimsical designs are really fun to work with. For this tutorial, I show you how to extract an image from a paper, and turn it into a sticker to use as a companion element to the kit.

To start, open your paper and zoom in close on the image you want to extract.

Be sure to save your sticker as a new image, as either a png or a psd/tiff file. Now you can use your sticker to coordinate with the paper. (I love stickers!)

How to Clip a Paper- Digi Die-Cutting

A quick tutorial to start out your year:
How to clip a paper to a shape or Digi Die-Cutting
(In Photoshop CS6)

First open up your document- this can be a blank canvas or a template. Here I've used a blank canvas:

You can see my 12x12 canvas and my Layer Stack. Now we'll add our next shape.

Now I decided I don't want to have a white background, I'd like a patterned paper. So making sure that the Background Layer is highlighted, I'm going to add a patterned paper.
see the background layer^^ It's blue- that's what I want.

You can either drag it on (hold the shift key to center the paper) or use the File:Place command:
Click it then navigate to the paper you want and click Place.

Now your page should look like this:
Hit Enter to accept the paper if you have that big X on your page. Now we want to add a paper over that big red square. Select the square in your layer stack.

See^^ now the red square is selected.

Drag your paper or use the place command again. Now your page and layer stack look like this:

Hit enter if you have that big X. Now we want to "cut" the paper down to size.

Right click on your paper in the layer stack. This menu should pop up:
Click on Create Clipping mask. (shortcut is ctrl/command G)

Now your page looks like this:

See that little downward arrow? That means you have "clipped" your paper to the shape beneath it. You can clip to text, other shapes, and all those layers on templates!
